- Q. Do I need an art background to enter?
A. No. We want everyone of all ages and skill level to participate.
- Q. Can I enter more than one piece?
A. Of course. The goal is to gather many pieces of original 6-by-6 works of art. Each person may enter up to 4 artworks.
Q. Can my piece be 3D (three dimensional)?
A. Yes. 6 by 6 by 6 inches. Please keep in mind that in order to install this exhibition our highly skilled staff will only be using push pins and the occasional small nail. If your piece is smaller than 6 inches, please mount it to a 6 by 6 inch board or support.
Q. Can I enter a metal piece?
A. Please keep in mind that it will be hanging by push pins. If your artwork (or support board) is thicker than 1/4 inch please drill holes into it to accommodate pins/nails.
- Q. I want to frame my pieces. if I supply the hanging materials, can I enter these works?
A. Please don't. Because we have thousands of artworks to install, works will be tacked to the wall. Some may be pierced, most will not be.
- Q. How Does Starting an Open Tab for the Opening Reception Work?
A. Starting an open tab for opening night allows you to beat the crowds and skip the lines! RoCo securely keeps your credit card information on file allowing you to skip the lines for easy and fast purchasing during opening night. Call 585.461.2222 or stop by RoCo to sign-up now!
- Q. How does the Opening Reception Artwork Raffle work?
A. Buyers must register for a buyer number when they arrive at preview hours (May 28-June 1, 1-9pm) or the opening reception (June 2, 4-10pm). If you would like to win an early buyer position to improve your chances of getting your favorite artworks, you may enter the raffle for buyer positions #1-20. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase May 28-June 1 for $5 each. On June 2 at 7:30pm, buyer position #1 will be selected from the raffle bin and the winner will have one minute to mark their artwork purchases with unique stickers. After one minute has elapsed, buyer position #2 will be drawn and announced, and the winner will have one minute to mark their artwork purchases before buyer position #3 is announced, and so on. Buyer position #1 may continue to select artworks after buyer position #2 is called, and so on. One minute after buyer position #20 is announced, all other buyers will be allowed to make their selections. Stickers for selecting your chosen artworks should be purchased for $20 each before the raffle.
- Q. What are the goals of 6x6?
A. 6x6x2018 will be the eleventh year of 6x6 exhibitions. Last year, 6x6 grew to include thousands of artworks from around the world and every US State! This year we hope to reach deeper into the global art community, especially yours. This includes obtaining artwork from more national and international artists and celebrities. We would also like to have significant participation from all 12 of Rochester's sister cities. Every year, 6x6 has grown and the consistently high caliber of artworks each year has been astounding. Help us make 6x6 an amazing international expression of support for artists, arts institutions, creativity, and participation!
A. 6x6 is RoCo's only fundraiser. Our fundraising goal is to sell 2,500 Artworks. Please visit the Online Gallery, find your favorites, click "Add to Cart" and support our thoughtful contemporary art programming!
- Q. Which artworks are already sold? Is there a way that I can shop online for only the available artworks?
A. Artworks that are sold are marked with a colored dot, both in-house and online. The 6x6 site has two buttons in the top left corner that allow you to switch between "All" view and "For Sale" view.
- Q. I am a school teacher and I would like to have my elementary or high school class enter artworks.
A. We love having student participation in 6x6! Have all your students make 6-by-6 artworks, then choose four artworks from each class (based on your own criteria) to be entered in 6x6.
- Q. Does 6 x 6 inches include a border or mat? Can my piece be smaller than 6 inches square?
A. The external dimensions of the piece should be exactly 6 inches square including border and mat. Smaller pieces may be mounted to 6" x 6" paper or board. Installation is based on a grid, artworks larger than 6" x 6" affect the efficiency of this method.
- Q. Can I enter a series?
A. Of course. We cannot guarantee that the complete series will be installed together or in order, but we will try to install them in a horizontal row. We cannot accomodate vertical sequencing. Each person may enter up to four artworks. If you want them in a certain order, please number the works left to right.
- Q. How will the work be installed?
A. The work will be installed in the order in which it is received.
Q. Can I enter a canvas?
A. Of course. 6-by-6 canvases are accepted as long as they are pre-wired.
- Q. Can I build a video installation?
A. Yes, as long as the video is 6 by 6 inches.
- Q. May I cut a 6-by-6 hole out of the gallery wall as my artwork?
A. No. You may, however cut a 6-by-6 square out of another gallery's wall and enter that as your piece. Gallery suggestions upon request.
- Q. If my piece does not sell during the exhibition will I get it back?
A. No. Any works not sold by July 15, 2018 will remain for sale online. We reserve the right to sell works for less than $20.
- Q. I entered artworks in past year(s) that did not sell. Will you exhibit those again this year?
A. No. This year's installation will consist entirely of new artworks. Unsold artworks from 2009-17 are available for viewing and purchase online, but they will not be exhibited in 2018. Artworks from 2008 are also available upon request.
- Q. Will all artworks be displayed?
A. Last year's exhibition consisted of over 5000 artworks from 50 US states and around the world. SEND YOUR ARTWORKS EARLY!
- Q. Are any artworks rejected?
A. Rochester Contemporary Art Center reserves the right to reject any artwork. However, after ten years of 6x6 exhibitions we haven't once rejected a work.
- Q. What other restrictions are there for the artworks?
A. Please do not enter any works containing glitter. We have found each year that it spreads to other works. Any art being entered with unfixed charcoal or pastel must have a temporary cover sheet for both its protection and that of the surrounding works. Please label the cover sheet as such as it will be removed upon installation.
- Q. Where does the money from the "sale" of an artwork go?
A. All proceeds benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center. This is a fun initiative that brings together a diverse group of people. It is also an important fundraiser that enables thoughtful contemporary art programming.
- Q. Will the artists find out who purchased their artwork?
A. Not from Rochester Contemporary Art Center. The buyer receives a Buyer Receipt (right half of the entry form) with the artist's name and contact information. The buyer may then contact the artist if they would like to. When entering artworks, be sure to put some form of contact information (ex. a business card) if you wish to be contacted by the buyer of your artwork. Due to the scale of this exhibition we are not able to provide the buyer's information to each artist.
- Q: If my artwork sells, do I still retain copyright?
A: Yes, the copyright belongs to the artist upon creation and remains as such regardless of the buyer. It is important to include contact information with your piece so that the buyer can contact you.
- Q. When can I begin purchasing works from 6x6 2018?
A. The gallery exhibition will open for preview May 28-June 1. Sales will begin June 2 at 7:30pm starting with the buyer's choice raffle. Buying will then be open to all once the raffle ends. The 6x6x2018 online gallery will be available for previewing May 18 and global online purchasing will begin June 5 at 10am.
- Q. How does the Online Gallery work?
A. The 6x6 2018 Online Gallery will be available for previewing starting May 18, 2018 and global online purchasing will begin June 5 at 10am. You may currently purchase from previous 6x6 exhibitions (2009-17).
- Q. I don't have a PayPal account. Can I still purchase online?
A. YES. When purchasing online, select "Donate via Paypal". You do not need a PayPal account to do this. You may then enter your credit card number.
- Q. What is the process for purchasing online?
A. Use the colored navigation arrows on the left to view the artworks.
Select your favorite artworks and click "Add to Cart."
After checking out, you may choose to become a member (add membership)
Choose shipping method: "I'll Pick Up" or "Please Ship to Me." ($9 US and $17 for International)
Donate via Paypal with your credit card. You do not need a PayPal account to do this.
After completing the checkout process and making your donation (major credit cards or PayPal) you will immediately receive an email confirming your selection and revealing the artists' name!
Your artwork(s) from 2009-17 will be shipped 2-3 business days after purchase. Artworks from 2018 will be shipped via USPS and will arrive by July 26, 2018.

- Q. How do I retrieve artwork I purchase from 6x6x2018?
A. Artworks from 6x6x2018 will remain on display until July 15, 2018. Artwork Pick-Up days are: July 15-18, 12-6pm. If you are unable to pick up your purchased works on these days, please pay our flat shipping fee of $9 to have the work mailed to you AFTER the close of the exhibition. Artworks will be shipped via USPS and will arrive by July 26, 2018.
- Q. I can't make it to the Pick-Up days. How will I obtain the pieces that I purchased?
A. When you buy any piece for $20 you have the option of paying an extra $9 to have the work(s) mailed to you AFTER the close of the exhibition on July 15, 2018. If you can't make it to the pick-up days, you must have the work shipped to you.
- Q. I purchased artworks from the 2009-17 Online Galleries. When will they arrive?
A. When you buy any piece for $20 you have the option of paying an extra $9 to have the work mailed to you. This is the recommended pick-up/delivery method. Artworks will be shipped via USPS within two to three days. Please allow five to seven days for your artworks to arrive. For pick-up orders, please retrieve your pieces during normal gallery hours (Wed-Sun, 1-5pm, Fri 1-9pm).
- Q. When can I browse and purchase artworks from 2009-17?
A. NOW. You can browse and purchase works from both 2009-17 in the 6x6 online galleries. View "How does the Online Gallery work?" for more instructions.
- Q. Admission to the exhibition?
A. Admission for the exhibition is $2 for non-members and free for members. General admission to the opening reception on June 2, 2018 from 4-10pm is $12 for non-members and $8 for members.
- Q. Problems with the website?
A. The 6x6 Online Galleries work best with Internet Explorer 6+, Firefox 2+ and Safari 3+.
- Don't Hesitate!
Throughout the exhibition (June 2 - July 15, 2018), purchases completed at RoCo will be immediately synchronized with those completed through this website. Please keep in mind that someone may be shopping in the gallery for the artworks that you would like to select online. If someone at RoCo buys an artwork that is in your cart before you completely checkout, you will be unable to finish the online transaction and unable to claim the artwork. If you find artworks that you like, don't delay! Each artwork is an original! Supporting RoCo is a good cause!
