- Q. What are the goals of 6x6?
A: Each year 6x6 includes thousands of artworks from around the world and every US State! This year we hope to reach deeper into the global art community, especially yours. This includes obtaining artwork from more national and international artists and celebrities. We would also like to have significant participation from all 12 of Rochester's sister cities. Every year, 6x6 has grown and the consistently high caliber of artworks each year has been astounding. Help us make 6x6 an amazing international expression of support for artists, arts institutions, creativity, and participation! 6x6 is RoCo's only fundraiser. Our fundraising goal is to sell 2,000 - 2,500 Artworks. Please visit the Online Gallery, find your favorites, click "Add to Cart" and support our thoughtful contemporary art programming! - Q. Where does the money from the "sale" of an artwork go?
A: All proceeds benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center. This is a fun initiative that brings together a diverse collection of artists and artworks. It is also an important fundraiser that support our thoughtful contemporary art programming throughout the rest of the year.

- Q: How do I enter my artwork?
A: Complete both left and right side of the entry form (link in header^) for each individual artwork. There is no fee to enter. Artwork entries are accepted now until the entry deadline date.

- Q: Do I need an art background to enter?
A: No. We welcome and encourage participation from everyone of all ages and skill levels. - Q: Can I enter more than one piece?
A: Of course. The goal is to gather many pieces of original 6-by-6 works of art. Each person may enter up to 4 artworks Q. Can my piece be 3D (three dimensional)?
A. Yes, 6 by 6 by 6 inches. Please keep in mind that in order to install this exhibition our highly skilled staff will only be using push pins and the occasional small nail. If your piece is smaller than 6 inches, please mount it to a 6 by 6 inch board or support.
Q. Can I enter a metal piece?
A. Yes. Please keep in mind that it will be hanging by push pins. If your artwork (or support board) is thicker than 1/4 inch, it must be wired.- Q. I want to frame my pieces.
A. Please don't.
- Q. I am a school teacher and I would like to have my elementary or high school class enter artworks.
A. We encourage student participation in 6x6, up to 4 artworks per class. Have all your students make 6-by-6 artworks, then choose four artworks from each class (based on your own criteria) to be entered in 6x6.
- Q. Does 6 x 6 inches include a border or mat? Can my piece be smaller than 6 inches square?
A. The external dimensions of the piece should be exactly 6 inches square including border and mat. Smaller pieces may be mounted to 6" x 6" paper or board. Installation is based on a grid, artworks larger than 6" x 6" can NOT be accomodated. - Q. Can I enter a series?
A. Of course. We cannot guarantee that the complete series will be installed together or in order, but we will try to install them in a horizontal row. We cannot accommodate vertical sequencing. If you want your artworks in a certain order, please number the works left to right. - Q. If my piece does not sell during the exhibition will I get it back?
A. No. Any works not sold by the end of the exhibition will remain for sale online. We reserve the right to sell works for less than $20. - Q. I entered artworks in past year(s) that did not sell. Will you exhibit those again this year?
A. No. This year's installation will consist entirely of new artworks. Unsold artworks from past years are available for viewing and purchase online, but they will not be exhibited again. - Q. Will all artworks be displayed?
A. Yes! - Q. How will the work be installed?
A. Artworks will be installed in the order they are received, using push pins around the edge of the artwork. Q. Can I enter a canvas?
A. Of course. 6-by-6 canvases are accepted as long as they are wired. If your artwork (or support board) is thicker than 1/4 inch, it must be wired. *Please keep wire taut as pictured.
- Q. Are any artworks rejected?
A. We reserve the right to reject any artwork. However, 6x6 is intended to be an unfiltered global expression of creativity and after many years of 6x6 exhibitions we haven't once rejected artworks due to content. - Q. What other restrictions are there for the artworks?
A. No glitter. No unfixed charcoal or pastel. That’s it! - Q. If my artwork sells, do I still retain copyright?
A.Yes, the copyright belongs to the artist upon creation and remains as such. It is important to include contact information with your piece so that the buyer can contact you. http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ01.pdf - Q. Will the artist find out who purchased their artwork?
A. Not from Rochester Contemporary Art Center. The buyer receives a Buyer Receipt (right half of the entry form) with the artist's name and contact information. We strongly encourage each buyer to contact the artist.
Questions about the 6x6 Virtual Art Sale Kick-off
- Q. How does the auction for early buyer positions work?
A. This year we are offering early buyer positions. Winners will get to purchase 6x6 artworks online before all others, even before those who purchase admission for the Virtual Art Sale Kick-off. The winner Early Buyer Position will receive a unique code to access the 6x6 website.
- Q. What is the benefit of bidding on the early buyer positions?
A. The winner of each Early Buyer Position will have a full hour as the only person on the website to purchase their favorite artworks! The winner of the first position will have the first choice of ALL 6x6 artworks, the winner of the second Early Buyer Position will be able to select their favorite artworks after the first Early Buyer is finished, etc. - Q. Do I have to pay admission for the Virtual Opening/Art Sale Kick off?
A. Yes, admission can be purchased on our website; $15 / $10 for RoCo members. Winners of the early buyer positions do NOT have to pay additional admission to shop again during the Virtual Art Sale Kick-off. - Q: When will I receive my access code?
A. Access codes are emailed immediately after purchase. Please be sure to check your spam folders and promotions tab for gmail users. - Q. How long can I keep artwork in my online shopping cart?
A. Our website is designed to prevent double purchases of the same artwork, however with so many people shopping online on Opening Weekend we suggest you add to your cart and checkout quickly.
- Q. Help! I have not received my special access code!
A. Please be sure you are receiving RoCo’s emails to your inbox. We suggest you also check your spam folder. If you are unable to locate your access code please call us at 585-461-2222.
General exhibition and website questions
Don't Hesitate! Purchases completed in gallery will be immediately synced with online purchases. Please keep in mind that someone may be shopping in the gallery for the artworks that you would like to select online. If you find artworks that you like, don't delay.
- Q. How can I figure out the medium of an artwork?
A. You can filter artworks by their medium with the filter button available in each year’s gallery. It is located on the top right of next to the list of participating artist names.
- Q. Which artworks are already sold? Is there a way that I can shop online for only the available artworks?
A. Artworks that are sold are marked with a colored dot, both in-house and online. The 6x6 site has two buttons in the top left corner that allow you to switch between "All" view and "For Sale" view.
- Q. I don't have a PayPal account. Can I still purchase online?
A. YES. When purchasing online, select "Pay with Debit or Credit Card". You do NOT need a PayPal account. - Q. What is the process for purchasing online?
A. Use the arrows to navigate the website.
Select your favorite artworks and click "Add to Cart."
At check out you may choose to become a member (thank you for your support)
Choose shipping method: "I'll Pick Up" or "Please Ship to Me." ($9 US and $17 for International)
Checkout with your credit card. You do not need a PayPal account to do this.
After completing the checkout process and payment (major credit cards or PayPal) you will receive an email confirming your selection(s) and revealing the artist's name(s)!
Your artwork(s) from past years will be shipped within 2-3 business days. Artworks from the current year will be shipped via USPS and will arrive by the second week of August.
If you need further assistance with the online selection and check-out process, call 585-461-2222 during gallery hours. - Q. I can't make it to the Pick-Up days. How will I obtain the pieces that I purchased?
A. When you purchase artworks you will have the option of paying an extra $9 to have the work(s) mailed to you. If you can't make it to the pick-up days, please have the artwork shipped. You may also send someone to pick up days to retrieve your work for you. - Q. When will I receive the artwork(s) I purchased from the current year’s 6x6?
A. You can retrieve your artworks during the pick up days. Buyers who chose to have this year’s artwork purchase mailed will receive them by the second week of August. - Q. When will I receive the artwork(s) I purchased from a past year’s 6x6?
A. Artworks purchased from a past year can be picked-up in our gallery space during our open hours. Buyers who chose to have a past year’s purchase shipped should allow five to seven days for your artworks to arrive. Artworks are shipped via USPS. - Q. Will you be selling 6x6 frames this year?
A. Yes! 6x6 frames will be available during pick-up days and for sale online here. - Q. Problems with the website?
A. The 6x6 Online Galleries work best with Internet Explorer 6+, Firefox 2+ and Safari 3+. Make sure your window is not minimized and you are not zoomed in.
